“Pi has 6.4 billion known digits that would take approximately 133 years to recite without stopping”

At Qatar Leadership Academy, Math Department celebrated Pi day on March 18th as March 14th was Saturday with full support of school administration and other departments. QLA has been celebrating Pi day for the past four years. This year, two schools AKIS-BS and AKIS-CBSE also participated in this event. We started our day with some fun activities such as human formation of symbol "Pi", 100 meters hurdle race where students have to answer a math question to pass the hurdle and arranging students from all three schools in the sequence of digits of Pi. This was a real fun and gave our boys the opportunity to interact and collaborate with students from other schools. All of the teachers and student-participants wore Pi day t-shirts specially designed for this day. After this we got down to some serious stuff; Math Jeopardy for grades 7 through 10 where all the students participated ardently and were very spirited to grab the 1st place. An art competition was also conducted where teams from three schools have to make a poster related to Pi day. The school and the venue of the event were decorated for the occasion displaying information about Pi day. However the main attraction was the chain of color-coded paper loops with approximately 4000 digits of Pi, which was made by all the students of QLA. Apple and blueberry pies were served to all the students and teachers during short break to bring required sweetness to this celebration and to say thanks to their support and contributions. After presentation of artwork, awards were distributed to the schools with AKIS (CBSE) lifted the winner’s trophy. The day ended with fund raising event with the help of student’s council where we organized couple of fun activities for students and teachers. The activities designed for this day was meant to create a positive environment for math and generate a curiosity among the students about the letter Pi and Math at large. Math Department hopes to continue this celebration in future with great interest and involvement.
