International Baccalaureate (IB)
The International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme is a rigorous pre-university course of studies, leading to external examinations that meet the needs of highly motivated secondary students between the ages of 16 to 19 years.
Designed as a comprehensive two-year curriculum that allows graduates to fulfill requirements of various national education systems, the diploma model is not based on the pattern of a single country but incorporates the best elements of several.
The IBDP is a well-rounded liberal arts and science program designed to prepare students thoroughly for success in life beyond school. The International Baccalaureate gives IBDP graduates access to the world's leading universities, as well as solid preparation for higher achievement once enrolled.
Students are required to study a total of six academic subjects, each chosen from the different subject groups. To allow for depth, three subjects are studied at higher level (HL), and to ensure a broad education, three are studied at standard level (SL). Students also take the interdisciplinary course Theory of Knowledge (TOK); complete an Extended Essay on a research topic of their own interest, individually chosen within a studied academic subject; and actively participate in the Creativity, Action, and Service (CAS) program.
Students take written examinations at the end of the programme, which is marked by external IB examiners. They also complete assessment tasks in the school, which are either initially marked by teachers and then moderated by external moderators or sent directly to external examiners.
Qatar Leadership Academy was authorized to offer the IBDP in March 2007, with the first graduating cohort sitting exams in May 2009. The academy currently holds three assistant IB examiners and one senior moderator as part of our teaching staff.
